The Components of Licensure
Education
1984: The board requires a degree from a NAAB-accredited program.
1998: Continuing education is required for licensure renewal.
Experience
1982: The IDP is required for initial licensure.
Late-1960s: Applicants with a professional degree must also have three years of experience.
Examination
1954: Arkansas models its examination after NCARB’s syllabus.
1960s: The board begins offering NCARB’s national examination.
Noteworthy
- Arkansas Legislature created the original Arkansas Architectural Act and the Arkansas State Board of Architects in 1939.
- In 2009, the Arkansas State Board of Architects merged with the Arkansas State Board of Landscape Architects and Arkansas State Board of Registered Interior Designers.
- 2014 President Blakely C. Dunn, FAIA, was the first president in NCARB history to complete the Intern Development Program (IDP).
