The Components of Licensure

Education

1972: Montana adopts the NCARB education standard, requiring 12 years of experience as an alternative for applicants without a degree from a NAAB-accredited program.
 
1981: A degree from a NAAB-accredited program is required.
 

Experience

1995: The IDP is required.
 

Examination

1923: Montana begins administering its first complete examination that was accepted by NCARB.
 
1950: Montana’s exams are deemed equivalent to NCARB examinations.
 
1963: Montana begins administering NCARB’s national examination.

Noteworthy

In 2007, the Montana Board of Architects merged with the landscape architects.
 
In 2015, Montana began requiring continuing education for license renewal.
 
After 20 years of debate, the board adopted the same definition of “Public Buildings” as the State Building Codes Division in 2017.
