The Components of Licensure

Education

1925: Applicants are not required to graduate from college, but approved college graduation is considered equivalent to four years of experience.

1997: Continuing education is required for license renewal.

1999: A degree from a NAAB-accredited program is required.

Experience

1925: Six years of experience are required for licensure.

1988: The IDP is accepted for licensure.

1999: The IDP is required. 

Examination

1925: All applicants for initial licensure are required to pass an exam.

1963-64: South Dakota begins administering NCARB’s national exam.

1999: The ARE (the only exam administered for decades) is officially required.

Noteworthy

  • South Dakota State University’s Master of Architecture program received NAAB accreditation on January 1, 2016.
  • The board issued its first license in 1925.
