The Components of Licensure

Education

1956: Candidates can substitute additional experience in lieu of a degree from a NAAB-accredited program.

Experience

1956: Applicants with a degree from a NAAB-accredited program must complete four years of experience; other applicants must complete 12 years.

1974: Applicants with a degree from a NAAB-accredited program must complete three years of experience.

Examination

1970: The board begins administering NCARB’s national exams.

Noteworthy

The Panama Canal Zone left NCARB in 1979 when the United States returned the territory to Panama.
