The Components of Licensure
Education
1947: Graduation from an accredited architecture program and three years of experience are recommended, but not required.
1955: A degree in architecture, architectural engineering, or architectural design from a school in good standing is required.
1959: Applicants without an approved architecture degree can document experience as an equivalent.
2008: Continuing education is required for license renewal.
Experience
1947: Applicants with no degree must complete eight years of experience.
1955: Applicants with a degree must complete one year of experience.
1959: Applicants with no degree must complete 10 years of experience, and applicants with an architecture degree must complete three.
1983: The IDP is recommended, and officially adopted in 2014.
2014: The IDP is required.
Examination
1909: Colorado Board administers annual written and oral examination.
1947: The exam is delivered over four days , with a minimum passing score of 65 percent per section and 75 percent overall.
1970: NCARB’s exam is adopted in the Rules, which are updated to specify the ARE in 1983.
1995: Colorado pilots the computerized exam.
2011: Early eligibility is allowed.
Noteworthy
- Colorado Board members originally paid the NCARB membership fees, contributing five dollars each.
- From 1913 to 1955, AIA members could become licensed without taking an exam.
- Colorado Board member Laura Cronenwett was the first woman to serve on the NCARB Board of Directors.
- Select Colorado Board members, board staff, and the state psychometrician participated in computerized examination centers throughout Colorado.
- The board was combined with engineers and land surveyors in 2006 after facing a sunset review.
