The Components of Licensure

Education

1990: Applicants without a degree from a NAAB-accredited program can document additional experience as an alternative.

Experience

1990: Applicants with a degree from a NAAB-accredited program must document two years of experience, applicants with any other four-year degree in architecture must document five years, and applicants with only a high school education must document 12.

2000: Applicants with a master’s degree from a NAAB-accredited program must document one year of experience, applicants with a bachelor’s degree from a NAAB-accredited program must document two years, applicants with any other four-year degree in architecture must document eight years, and applicants with only a high school education must document 12.

Examination

1988: The ARE is required.

Noteworthy

The Northern Mariana Islands originally joined NCARB in 1984, but left in 2006. The territory rejoined NCARB in 2018.
