The Components of Licensure

Education

1977: Rhode Island adopts NCARB’s education standard, requiring candidates without a degree from a NAAB-accredited program to document 12 years of experience as an alternative.

1988: A degree from a NAAB-accredited program or its equivalent is required, updated to solely a degree from a NAAB-accredited program in 1997.

Experience

1987: The IDP is required.

Examination

1969: Rhode Island starts administering NCARB’s national exams.

Noteworthy

In 1997, the board worked together with the boards of several other design professions to propose legislation as an alternative to board consolidation.
